Last Whoopi Standing!
After 20 years on the air, The View's last host standing is none other than Whoopi Goldberg! The show, which premiered on ABC's network in 1997, has had a slew of hosts including Meredith Vieira, Barbara Walters, Star Jones, Rosie O'Donnell and more to grace the profound table that encompasses the woman's perspective of media in the world. Barbara Walters, co-creator of the star studded show, recently retired this past May; following the footsteps of her co-host Joy Behar. Behar's departure for solo action...ehem...I mean greener pastures, left room for an available seat. Jenny McCarthy quickly filled that seat, giving audiences a bright, new, and rather unexpected voice at the table.
McCarthy made the cast complete as Walters, Sherri Shepherd, and Goldberg welcomed their new castmate. Well, one season in and not one but TWO hosts are bidding fairewell! Shepherd released a statement saying,
"It's been seven wonderful years on 'The View' and after careful consideration it is time for me to move on. I am extremely grateful to Barbara Walters and Bill Gedde for giving me the opportunity. I look forward to the business opportunities that lay ahead for me and I am incrediby grateful to my View family and my fans for supporting me on this journey."
McCarthy then tweeted the following on leaving the show,
"My View will be changing too. As will with many hard working folks. Thanks to everyone at the show for your dedication and an amazing year."
McCarthy, who joined the show only last year, was brought on to bring less political arguments to the forefront in an effort to revamp the show's demographic. The change dind't go over well as the political topics were what gave the show such a running with its wide range of viewers.
ABC's statement leads fans and media to believe that the choice was not completely (if at all) voluntary for McCarthy and Shepherd:
"'The View' will be moving in an exciting new direction next season and ABC has made decisions to evolve the sohw creatively."
TMZ claims the women were fired while The Associated Press reports that as far as Shepherd is concerned, she and ABC failed to come to an agreement on terms of a new contract.
Either way this leaves only one host left: Whoopi! No official statements have been made so far by Goldberg or any other castmate concerning Godlberg, who joined the cast in 2007 along with Shepherd. Needless to say the show will have a MAJORLY different look when it returns in the fall. Will Godlberg stay? Will she leave? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
