Jussie Smollett Denies "Closet"
So the internet has been buzzing non-stop over one controversial character on Fox's new hit show, Empire! That's right, you guessed it! Jussie Smollett has been the talk of the town since portraying (now) out, gay singer/songwriter Jamal Lyon; son to Luscious Lyon, CEO of the family owned company.
Blogs were ablaze when co-star Malik Yoba confirmed in an interview that Smollett was, in fact, gay. This threw social media into a frenzy due to the fact that Smollett was quoted as saying that he doesn't discuss his personal life in interviews. He followed this statement by simply telling people to "watch" him because he's not hiding anything. This of course had people wondering,
"If he doesn't discuss his personal life, why did Yoba?"
Yoba later came forth saying that the quote in which he 'outed' Smollett was a misquote done by Black Life.
Well, now everyone can rest easy as Smollett officially confirms his sexual orientation. In a behind the scenes interview with one of America's most lovable hosts, dancers, and comedians, Ellen DeGeneres. When asked about the allegations about being 'in the closet', Smollett explained that he has a home in which he likes to protect. He went on to say,
“So that’s why I choose not to talk ‘bout my personal life...."
“But there is without a doubt, no closet that I’ve ever been in, and I just wanted to make that clear, but it was most important for me to make that clear to you on your show at this time in the world. And that’s where I’m at.”
The obvious question that is on peoples lips is,
"How come if you're gay you need to announce it?"
Other questions circling the blog beat is,
"Can you really out someone you already suspect is gay?"
My take on it is, it's no one's business if he is or isn't! I commend his reason and choice to put the rumors to rest, however, I supported his decision to remain nuetrally silent because it's not the worlds business who someone sleeps with. If it's not you, you really shouldn't worry about it.
I also don't feel like Smollett (despite his actvism) should be expected to carry on his shoulders the banner for the entire gay minority community simply because he's on a hot new series. People should allow the work to be the work and let the personal lives of these celebs be just that...THEIR person life!!!
Although, admittingly, I'd be out of a job if they did lol!
